Fade or taper: what is the difference?
Tapers
A taper usually makes the hair gradually shorter around the sideburns and at the back of the neck. It keeps more hair on the rest of the sides. You might prefer this if you want tidy edges without taking the whole side very short.
Low, mid and high fades
A fade blends longer hair into shorter hair across the sides and back. Low, mid and high describe how far up that change begins. A higher fade shows more of the short area. You can discuss how close you want it cut; a fade does not have to go down to bare skin.
Choose the top and sides together
The length on top changes how the short sides look. Bring a side view of your reference as well as the front. Say if you want to keep some fullness around the temples or prefer the sides much closer.
Textured crops, curtain cuts and side parts
Textured crops
A crop puts the focus on the fringe and the shape on top. A textured finish adds separation and movement to the hair. Discuss whether you like a short, clear fringe or a softer front. Your current length and the way your hair grows affect the cut you choose.
Curtain cuts
Curtain cuts leave enough length for a parting and movement around the front. Show how long you want the hair around your ears and how the sides should join the top. If you are growing your hair, explain the style you are working towards so the trim supports that plan.
Classic cuts and side parts
You can adjust a familiar cut without changing the whole style. Keep your usual parting, shorten the sides or leave more length at the front. Tell us whether you want hair that sits naturally or a more shaped, styled look.
Beard trimming, shaping and clean shaves
A beard trim can tidy the edges while keeping the length you like. Agree how much to remove and which parts to leave. The edge along your cheeks, the line under your jaw and the moustache all affect the shape. You can also discuss how the beard meets your haircut at the sideburns.
If you are growing your beard, point out any areas you want left alone. For a clean shave, mention your usual shaving routine and any sensitivity. When booking a haircut and beard trim together, describe both so we can plan the whole appointment.

Keep the length you like
A fresh haircut can keep movement around the front. For a curtain cut like this, discuss the parting, the length around the ears and how you wear it at home. If you are growing your hair, point out the areas you want left longer.
Pick a haircut you can wear every day
A photo may show both a haircut and the way someone has styled it. Tell us which part you like: the fringe, the height at the front or the shorter sides. Your hair may have a different thickness or natural wave, so use the photo to explain what you want.
Be clear about your morning routine. If you leave your hair natural, say so. If you use a dryer or style your parting, mention that too. Ask how to style the cut at home and what needs tidying between visits. If you are growing out a shorter cut, discuss the next shape you want.
What affects the cost of your visit?
A haircut alone, a haircut with beard shaping and a clean shave cover different work. When comparing a gents salon or barber, check which services and styling the quote includes. Adding colour or a treatment changes the work involved and needs its own quote.
